Tauron Festiwal Nowa Muzyka
9 Tauron Nowa Muzyka
Trips around Katowice and Upper Silesia during Tauron Nowa Muzyka 2016.

City’s iconic location, accoustical masterpiece and digital cult objects - festival Tauron Nowa Muzyka visitors get a chance to explore the backdoors of three characteristic Katowice located buildings: Spodek (literally: Saucer), Międzynarodowe Centrum Kongresowe and NOSPR (National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio).
Those who are more into cyber emotions should check out the Computer Science and Computers Museum, where old PC’s and game consoles await.

Spodek and MCK

It’s space design Spodek owes to the imagination of it’s creators but also to mining damages to the area. It’s been discovered that only a round construction cut to one side can successfully stand up to constant mining and ground deterioration caused by it. This was theory, so to test it in practice a total of 4000 soldiers were asked to invade the venue once it was completed and simultanously stomp and jump. Results showed that vibrations caused by the army was within the expected norm and Spodek was officially opened in 1971. It’s capacity at the time was 12000 people. Exactly 30 years lates, a volleyball in the World League has been watched by a total of 50000.
Festival trips is a good opportunity to see the changing rooms and main stage of which bands like Metallica, The Cure, Deep Purple, Korn, Depeche Mode or even Fidel Castro himself „performed”. Last year Spodek was joined by MCK (it’s direct neigbour). Those of you who can climb the top of Warszawa mine shaft and look towards both object will immediately understand why MCK’s roof has to be split in half - that’s where the Saucer landed.

Trip around Spodek and MCK - we will walk through the main ball rooms, function rooms, conference halls and auditorium where a short movie about MCK will be aired. After that we will make our way through an underground tunnel which connects both buildings and walk out directly to Spodek’s main hall where we will also visit the not so obvious places like the VIP room. Each participant will also get a chance to see the additional object around Spodek: swimming pool, ice rink and gym.

Computer Science and Computers Museum

How did the computers look when Man landed on the Moon? How much computing power was hidden in each kilogram of at the time high-end electronical equipment? How to load a game out of a tape? Those of you who want to see PC’s and video consoles from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s of the 20th century cannot miss out on this trip. The museum’s collection holds some of the classical oversize calculating machines, desktop computers and cult devices like Sinclair (ZX Spectrum), Atari, Commodore, Amiga, Amstrad, Canon, Acorn and others. What’s most important is the fact that each device is fully functional. You can sit down and start coding in the world of „retro programming”. Trip members can also play with old school video games so any Donkey Kong, Rotype, MoonPatrol, Mortal Combart or BombJack enthusiast is welcome to take a trip down the Memory Lane.
Who wants to find out how long a perforated tape has to be to hold one average mp3 track?

NOSPR (National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio).

This building is not only it’s remarkable red brick walls, it’s also a symbol. Built on top of a KWK Katowice Coal Mine. Built for a Symphony Orchestra that travelled the entire globe performing in some of the top venues but did not hold it’s own home location to perform and practice in Katowice.
The new NOSPR location is a very simple, straight forward building which hold very strong resemblence to worker architecture of Nikiszowiec settlement - the most picturesque part of Katowice often used by filmmaker as setting for movies. Simple from the outside, inside NOSPR hold an accoustic treasure - it’s two concert halls: main with capacity of 1800 seats and chamber which can hold up to 300 listeners at once. The arduous designing process even included a scale model 1:10 to test the accoustic forces inside the building. The end product is perfect. Who has not yet seen the main and chamber concert halls can do so on Friday and Saturday. Trip includes explorations of both and also backstages and foyer.
